The use of extended desktop in Windows with Promethean HID*-compliant hardware (*Human Interface Device), such as the ActivPanel or the ActivBoard Touch, is not always supported.

In some cases, interactivity on a Promethean display in extended mode will not work as expected. This is due to limitations of the operating system.

The information below aims to help users wishing to use Windows extended desktop and understand when it is supported or not with Promethean HID devices.

To illustrate this, several scenarios are considered, each one with a different setup. Some setups support the use of extended desktop, whereas others do not.

IMPORTANT: In scenarios 2, 3 and 4, ActivInspire is not running. The use of extended desktop for interaction with ActivInspire running is covered in Scenario 5.

1. For display only

When a Promethean interactive device is used as a simple screen, the extended desktop area is entirely controlled by the operating system.

In this scenario, extended desktop is supported.

2. Interactivity without ActivDriver installed

Without ActivDriver installed, interaction on Promethean HID devices is controlled by the operating system directly.

To set up one or more HID devices to become fully interactive, use Tablet PC Settings located in the Windows Control Panel.

In this scenario, extended desktop is supported.

3. Interactivity with ActivDriver installed and Pen mode set to ‘Tablet’

This scenario is not applicable to ActivPanel 1.

This is identical to Scenario 2.

When Pen mode is set to ‘Tablet’ in ActivManager, interaction on Promethean HID devices is controlled by the operating system instead of ActivDriver.

NB: To set Pen mode to ‘Tablet’, open the ActivManager Control Panel, go to the Pens tab and select Tablet.

In this scenario, extended desktop is supported.

4. Interactivity with ActivDriver installed and Pen mode set to ‘Mouse’

This scenario is not applicable to ActivPanel 1.

When Pen mode is set to ‘Mouse’ in ActivManager (the default setting for new installations of ActivDriver), touch interaction and pen interaction are handled differently.

NB: To check if Pen mode is set to ‘Mouse’, open the ActivManager Control Panel and go to the Pens tab.

Touch interaction is controlled by the operating system.

However, pen interaction is controlled by ActivDriver and each pen (or stylus) input is turned into a mouse input.

Windows does not support a mouse input to control a single interactive display in extended desktop. This is because mouse inputs will always span across the entire desktop area.

Due to this limitation, pen interaction is not supported in extended desktop.

In this scenario, extended desktop is NOT supported.

5. Interactivity when ActivInspire is running

There are some limitations to consider when ActivInspire is running while extended desktop is in use.

a. Certain features, such as the camera and recording tools, will only work on the primary screen.

b. ActivInspire depends on ActivDriver to determine the type of Promethean hardware connected and its capabilities. When ActivInspire is running, ActivDriver needs to be set up as per Scenario 4 so that:

  • it provides a higher quality handwriting experience for users of Promethean hardware
  • Dual User mode can be used, as it relies on the mouse input as one of the secondary users

When ActivInspire is running, extended desktop is NOT supported.
